WordPress: Add an Admin User

How to create an administrator account for us on your WordPress website. This takes about 2 minutes and lets us work on your site while you keep full control.

Before you start

  • WordPress admin login credentials (usually yoursite.com/wp-admin)
  • Admin-level access (not Editor or Author)

Steps

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard

Open your browser and go to yoursite.com/wp-admin (replace “yoursite.com” with your actual domain). Enter your username and password to log in. You’ll land on the WordPress dashboard.

  2. Go to the Users page

In the left sidebar, hover over Users. A submenu will appear. Click Add New User (it may say Add New depending on your WordPress version).

  3. Enter the username we provide

In the Username field, type the username we gave you. This is the login name for the account and cannot be changed later, so make sure it’s entered correctly.

  4. Enter our email address

In the Email field, type the email address we provided. WordPress will send a notification to this address with the account details.

  5. Set the role to Administrator

Scroll down to the Role dropdown and select Administrator. This gives us full access to manage your site’s design, content, and settings.

Tip: After our work is complete, you can change this account to an Editor role or remove it entirely. We’ll let you know when it’s safe to do so.
  6. Click Add New User

Click the Add New User button at the bottom of the page. WordPress will create the account and send a confirmation email to us. We’ll be able to log in and start working on your site right away.

Common Issues

I can’t access wp-admin

Try going to yoursite.com/wp-login.php instead. If that doesn’t work either, your hosting provider may have changed the login URL for security reasons. Check with your hosting company (GoDaddy, Bluehost, SiteGround, etc.) or look for a login link in your hosting dashboard.

I don’t see the Add New User option

Your WordPress account may not have Administrator-level access. Only Administrators can create new users. If you see options like “Your Profile” under Users but not “Add New,” your account is set to a lower role like Editor or Author. Contact whoever set up your site to have them either add us or upgrade your account.

I’m getting a “username already exists” error

That username is already taken on your WordPress site. Let us know and we’ll provide a different username to try. You can also check the All Users list to see if an old account with that name already exists.
