Google Domains / Squarespace: Grant Domain Access
How to update nameservers in Squarespace Domains (formerly Google Domains). Google Domains was acquired by Squarespace in 2023, so if your domain was originally registered with Google Domains, it’s now managed through Squarespace.
Before you start
- A Squarespace account (your Google Domains account was automatically migrated)
- Your domain name
- The nameserver addresses we provide (we’ll send these to you separately)
Steps
-
Sign in to Squarespace Domains
Go to
domains.squarespace.comand sign in. If your domain was originally registered through Google Domains, use the same Google account you used before. Squarespace migrated your domain automatically, so your original Google login should still work.Tip: If this is your first time visiting Squarespace Domains, you may be asked to accept updated terms of service. This is a normal part of the migration from Google Domains. -
Select your domain
After signing in, you’ll see a list of all domains associated with your account. Click on the domain you’d like us to manage. This opens the domain’s settings page.
-
Open DNS settings
In the left sidebar (or in the settings menu on mobile), click DNS. This takes you to the DNS management page where you can see your current records and nameserver configuration.
-
Go to the Nameservers section
Scroll down to the Nameservers section on the DNS page. By default, your domain will be using Squarespace’s nameservers (or Google’s, if they haven’t been changed since the migration). You’ll see a toggle or button to switch to custom nameservers.
-
Switch to custom nameservers
Click the option to Use custom nameservers. This disables the default nameservers and shows empty input fields where you can enter new ones.
If you see a warning that switching to custom nameservers will remove your current DNS records, that’s expected. Our nameservers will handle all DNS records for your domain going forward.
-
Enter our nameservers and save
Type or paste the nameserver addresses we sent you into the input fields, one per line. Most setups require two nameservers, but if we’ve provided more, click Add nameserver to add extra fields.
Double-check each address, then click Save. The update typically takes a few hours, but can take up to 48 hours to fully propagate across the internet. We’ll confirm on our end once everything is connected.
Tip: Copy and paste the nameserver addresses directly from our email. Even a small typo (like an extra space or a missing period) can prevent the connection from working.
Common Issues
My domain still shows Google Domains branding
NaN
I can’t find the DNS settings
Make sure you’re on the
domain management page at domains.squarespace.com, not the main
Squarespace website builder. These are two different products. After clicking on
your domain, look for DNS in the left sidebar. On mobile, you
may need to tap a menu icon to see the sidebar.
I saved the nameservers but my site hasn’t changed yet
Nameserver changes take time to spread across the internet. This process (called DNS propagation) typically finishes within a few hours, but can take up to 48 hours in some cases. You don’t need to take any further action. We’ll be monitoring the change on our end and will let you know as soon as your domain is connected.
